Congo confirms 24 deaths from Ebola last week

In the past week, 33 new cases of Ebola have been diagnosed in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Twenty-four of these people died of the effects of the virus, reports the Congolese Ministry of Health.

According to the ministry, the latest cases were observed between 8 and 14 October.

The World Health Organization WHO announced on Monday that an emergency committee is meeting to determine whether the situation in Congo is of international concern. The committee may suggest recommendations to suppress the epidemic.

There is a lot of fear that the virus is getting widely spread. In and around the city of Beni, relatively many contamination cases have recently been detected. Attacks of rebels in the Eastern Congo region have hindered aid provision, which has considerably increased the risk of contamination for residents.
