US Catholic Church withheld names of 500 priests
The Catholic Church in the American state of Illinois has withheld the names of at least five hundred priests and other clergy who have been accused of sexual abuse of minors. This is stated in a report that the State Attorney General has presented today.
Previously, a list was released with 185 names of people accused of sexual abuse of children. At least five hundred other names were withheld.
There is not enough done from the church to investigate accusations of abuse, according to the report. The police and the child protection were in many cases not informed. It is therefore unclear whether the abuse was ignored, or even by high-ranking clergymen was swept under the carpet.
“Church unable to examine itself”
The church in Illinois is not able to examine itself, writes Attorney General Lisa Madigan, and is therefore not the appropriate party to solve the “crisis around sexual abuse by clergymen”. The fourth term of Madigan ends soon, but her successor has announced that she will continue her work.
Blase Cupich, bishop of the city of Chicago and a confidant of Pope Francis, apologizes to victims on behalf of the church. He talks with dozens of other bishops in February with the Pope about abuse within the church.
