Alibaba demands working week of 72 hours

Alibaba CEO Jack Ma demands that his employees work at least 72 hours a week. According to the boss of the Chinese internet concern, they must embrace the 996 work culture: from 9 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 6 days a week.

“Working from 9 to 9 leads to enormous happiness,” Ma said recently at an internal Alibaba meeting. “If you don’t put more time and energy into your work than others, how can you be successful?”

People in China are not averse to hard work. But even there there is criticism of Ma’s statements. According to the Chinese authorities, the competitiveness of a company will not improve if employees work structurally overtime. In the Chinese technology sector in particular, employees face extremely long shifts and a lot of stress.
