Fortnite invaded by bots, the goal is still unclear
Epic Games suffers from a protracted cyber attack, in which a botnet creates new accounts, the maker of Fortnite reports to Kotaku on Sunday.
Some new players in the Fornite shooting game found that an account with their email address had been created, while they had not yet played the game. The account that already existed was created in Thailand.
These accounts are created by a botnet, which picks random e-mail addresses from the internet to create accounts. According to Epic Games, this botnet consists of more than 500,000 computers.
It is not clear why the accounts are created. Epic accounts are more often the target of hackers, but there is no clear motive for creating accounts with a random e-mail address. Epic Games is busy deleting the accounts as quickly as possible.
Fortnite is a popular shooting game that has more than 200 million players worldwide. In the game, players can purchase items to make their characters look better. Accounts with many of these items are wanted by hackers, because they can be sold for a lot of money.
