Facebook deleted 2.2 billion fake accounts in the first quarter of 2019

Good at deleting!

In the last quarter of 2018, another 1.2 billion fake accounts were deleted. Together that amounts to 3.4 billion accounts, twice as many as in the previous six months.

“We have seen a significant increase in the creation of fake accounts on Facebook over the past six months,” the tech company said in a new transparency report.

Facebook estimates that around 5 percent of monthly users are not real. That amounts to around 119 million accounts. Most fake accounts would be deleted automatically via algorithms within a few minutes.

It was the third time that Facebook published a transparency report. The company started this last year. Facebook calls the disclosure of the data “a way to take responsibility”.
