At least twenty dead in a possible ‘lone wolf’ attack
At least twenty people died in the shooting in a branch of the Walmart supermarket in El Paso US. That was announced by the Texas governor. Another 26 people were injured. The perpetrator was arrested and probably worked alone.
The police don’t want to confirm it officially, but several American media report that 21-year-old Patrick Crusius is the perpetrator. He was arrested by the police after the shooting. He would have surrendered without violence. Crusius is a white inhabitant of the Texan town of Allen.
The police are investigating whether Crusius had a racist motive for the massacre. An anti-immigration manifesto popping up on the internet is linked to him. According to American media, he allegedly joined the manifesto behind the attack on mosques in Christchurch.
The manifesto was online for almost twenty minutes before the police received a phone call about the shooting.
El Paso is one of the largest cities in Texas and is located right on the Mexican border. Many Hispanics live in El Paso. The police cannot yet confirm the authenticity of the manifesto.
Around half past ten in the morning, Crusius walked into the parking lot of the Walmart with an automatic weapon and opened fire. Images from security cameras show that the shooter with ear protectors walks into the Walmart and looks around for him.
At the time of the shooting, there were up to three thousand people in the Walmart in El Paso. It was busy there because of the start of the new school year. Many families were looking for new school supplies.
Immediately after the attack, the local hospital called for blood donation. They responded massively. There were long lines to donate. When the blood banks couldn’t handle it anymore, people appeared with water and food in front of the people standing in line.
President Trump calls the shooting “tragic” and “a cowardly deed.” He condemns the shooting. “There are no reasons to justify killing innocent people. Melania and I send our sincere thoughts and prayers to the fantastic people in Texas. ”
The massacre in El Paso is the deadliest American shooting since November 2017. Then a man shot 26 people in a church in Sutherland Springs. A few days ago, someone opened fire during a food festival in California. Three people died, and 12 people were injured.
Videos appeared on social media showing multiple shot victims. “It was a frightening situation,” says an eyewitness at CNN. At the time of the shooting there were many children in the mall. Hospitals in the region go all out to help the dozens of victims.
“This is a tragedy that we never thought would happen in El Paso,” said Mayor Dee Margo on CNN news channel.
Walmart says it is “in shock” in a statement. “We pray for the victims, the community and our employees, as well as the first responders. We work closely with law enforcement officers and will update where necessary. “
