US threatens with consequences if Greece offers help to Iranian tanker

The US has warned Greece of the possible consequences of offering port services to an Iranian supertanker. According to an official at the US Department of Foreign Affairs, that could be seen as support for a terrorist organization.

According to the source, the tanker of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, which the US sees as a terrorist organization, is used to bring crude oil to Syria. This would violate sanctions.

Washington is said to have approached the Greek government and ports on the Mediterranean. The vessel now appears to be on its way to the Greek port of Kalamata. It is not known why the crew chose that destination.

The tanker was named Grace 1, but has since been renamed Adrian Darya 1. The ship was confiscated at Gibraltar in early July because the vessel was to transport crude oil to Syria.

Iran later promised that the cargo would not be brought to Syria.
