AstraZeneca gets funding to develop vaccine – which may even not exist
British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has received more than a billion dollars in US government funding to develop a coronavirus vaccine due to be completed in September. Supply contracts have been signed for at least 400 million doses.
The vaccine is being developed in collaboration with researchers from the University of Oxford. The production capacity for that vaccine is at 1 billion doses and should increase even further.
Funding comes from the US Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority. This government organization has also given money to the French pharmacy group Sanofi for a corona vaccine.
