Trump applies additional pressure on WHO

President Donald Trump is going to end the U.S. relationship with the World Health Organization (WHO). He said that in a speech to the White House on Friday about Chinese security legislation that affects the autonomy of Hong Kong against the agreements.

Trump had previously suspended payments to the WHO because he believes the international organization is on the lead of China and has not been transparent about the emergence and development of the global corona crisis. The new virus was discovered in the Chinese city of Wuhan.

The US contributed over $ 450 million to the WHO budget last year, much more than Beijing. According to Trump, that money will go to other health projects in the world.

Trump said nothing about the financial sanctions he held out to China for curtailing Hong Kong’s freedoms, including in the area of trade. In doing so, he left the previous trade deal between the United States and China intact. However, if Hong Kong becomes part of the “Chinese system”, the US government will not hesitate to put an end to the preferential treatment of the former British crown colony. This has consequences for, among other things, export control and import duties.

Trump did not touch on the events in Minneapolis either. After his speech, he disappeared without answering questions.
