Iran asks EU to be mediator in possible talks with US

Antony Blinken sees Iranian nuclear bomb weeks away

The European Union should act as a mediator between Iran and the United States in order to save the 2015 nuclear agreement. That is what the Iranian Foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, said to CNN International.

According to Zarif, the High Representative for European foreign policy, Josep Borrell, should act as a mediator. As coordinator of the joint committee monitoring the agreement, he could define the measures to be taken by the United States and Iran.

The nuclear agreement was signed in 2015 by Iran, the US, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia, China and the EU. Its aim was to curb Iran’s nuclear programme. Former American president Donald Trump decided in May 2018 to unilaterally withdraw his country from the deal and impose sanctions on Iran. His successor, Joe Biden, has already said that he wants to rejoin the agreement that came under President Barack Obama.

The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said on Monday that Iran is only “weeks away from developing nuclear material”.

Iran believes that the US should take the first step towards reaching agreement again by lifting sanctions against Iran.
