Alphabet made huge profits in Q1 2021

Google parent company Alphabet made significantly more money in the last quarter than in the same quarter last year. This is mainly due to companies that again purchased advertisements via Alphabet services more often, according to the company’s quarterly figures.

During the coronavirus pandemic, Google was one of the few major tech companies to see revenue drop (albeit by only 2 percent in the second quarter of 2020). But in the first three months of 2021, the company recovered.

Alphabet’s total turnover amounted to 55.3 billion dollars (45.8 billion euros), an increase of about a third compared to a year earlier. Of these, 44.7 billion dollars came from advertisements. YouTube made $ 6 billion compared to $ 4 billion last year.

Services like Gmail and Google Drive for businesses yielded 6.5 billion dollars. That was about half more than in the first three months of 2020.

Google’s cloud services are still loss-making, although the components are growing. Financial director Ruth Porat explicitly mentions Google Cloud as a branch where Alphabet has opportunities to grow.

All in all, Google achieved $ 17.9 billion compared to $ 6.8 billion in the first quarter last year. Alphabet announced that it would spend $ 50 billion on the purchase of its own shares to reward shareholders.
