US to donate excess vaccines to Covax fund

The US government buys hundreds of millions of additional doses of Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine to donate to poorer countries. That will be officially announced early next week. The White House wouldn’t respond.

It would not be the first time that the US has made such a vaccine purchase. In June, the country bought 500 million doses intended for Covax, an international initiative to ensure that less prosperous countries also have access to coronavirus vaccines. It is unclear how many vaccines will be purchased this time.

There is also a debate in the US about whether fully vaccinated Americans should receive an additional coronavirus injection. A drug watchdog advisory committee meets on Friday to discuss that issue. Critics believe that additional doses needed for this should be given to countries that are lagging behind in vaccination.
