Abbas threatens to sever ties with the US and Israel again

Abbas spoke on Tuesday after a meeting of the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah. He said the Israeli annexation of any part of the West Bank would destroy all chances of a two-state solution. The Palestinian government, according to Abbas, has been “dismissed as of today” from all agreements with the US and Israeli governments and from all obligations arising from those agreements, including security matters.

The Palestinian President had previously said that the US peace plan for the Middle East presented by President Trump early this year cannot provide “peace and security.” He also threatened to suspend all relations with the US and Israel.

Abbas’s statements follow a bloody week on the West Bank. An Israeli soldier was fatally hit by a stone, a Palestinian teenager was killed and security forces managed to prevent a major bomb attack by Palestinians. The situation in the disputed areas is on edge.
