Grindr dating app removes filter for ethnicity

Now it is fairly useless, but politically perfect

American gay dating app Grindr will remove its ethnicity filter in the upcoming update, the company announced on Twitter. The choice was made out of solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and people of color who use the app.

Grindr users can set filters in the app to select potential dates. In addition to ethnicity, it also concerns age, weight and relationship status.

The ethnicity filter has long been criticized by woke Grindr users. The company says it will act now.

“We will continue to fight racism on Grindr,” the company writes of its choice to remove the filter now. “We do that by talking to our users and with a zero tolerance policy for racism and hate speech on our platform.”

The statement comes at a time when the United States is restless after the fatal arrest of a black unarmed man by a white police officer. George Floyd’s death sparked major protests in his city of Minneapolis, which spilled over into other cities in the US.
