Trump announced even bigger stimulus than Democrats proposed

American president Donald Trump is striving for an even greater support package than the Democrats have proposed so far. He said that on a radio show. The statements are remarkable because they seem to undermine his own negotiators.

Trump realized the same thing.

“I’m telling you something I won’t tell anyone else, because it might help or harm the negotiations,” the president said to talk show host Rush Limbaugh. “Frankly, I would like to see a bigger stimulus package than the Democrats or Republicans are offering.”

The much-needed extra state aid to drive the United States economy through the coronacrisis has long been the subject of dispute in Washington. Last week, the US House of Representatives finally approved a new aid package worth USD 2.2 trillion, but it needed further negotiations. Trump didn’t want to go above $ 1.6 trillion, and a few days ago, he threatened to pull the plug on the calls.

Meanwhile, the White House negotiators seemed to be on the verge of reaching some sort of compromise with the Democrats, with which the Republicans too can agree. That would be $ 1.8 billion. Early in the day, leading economic advisor Larry Kudlow argued against Fox that Trump had already approved a revised support package.

By the way, Mitch McConnell, the leader of the Republican majority in the Senate, stated that he was sceptical about reaching a deal for a support package for the presidential election on 3 November. He said that there are still too many differences and that there is not enough time to get a deal through Congress before the election.
