US surpassed China in medal count on Tokyo Olympics
The United States is once again the most successful country at the Summer Olympics. On the penultimate day China still had the lead in the medal classification, but the Americans still passed there on Sunday. This was due, among other things, to the gold in volleyball and basketball for women and to Jennifer Valente, who was the best in track cycling on the omnium.
With these three victories, the Americans achieved 39 Gold, 41 silver and 32 bronze medals. China has to make do with 38 times gold, 32 times silver and 18 times bronze. Host country Japan is also in the top 3 of the overall ranking with 27 gold, 14 silver and 16 bronze.
After London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016, it is the third time in a row that the United States has led the medal count at the Summer Olympics. In 2008, when the Olympic Games were in Beijing, China led the list with no less than 51 times gold. The United States had more medals than China, but significantly less gold.
