US: possible nuclear deal soon if Iran ‘shows seriousness’

The United States said on Thursday that ‘significant progress’ had been made during negotiations in Vienna to save the nuclear deal with Iran. According to the Americans, an agreement is possible within a few days ‘if Iran takes the issue seriously’.

,,We can agree on mutual return to full implementation of the JCPOA within a few days, ” a spokesman for the US State Department told the French news agency AFP. The JCPOA is the 2015 agreement that world powers signed with Tehran to curb Iran’s nuclear program. The Americans withdrew in 2018 under then-president Donald Trump, after which Iran increased uranium production.

For example, the International Summit in Vienna on the Iranian nuclear program seems to be heading for its climax. Iranian negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani said Wednesday on Twitter that a new agreement after weeks of negotiations is ‘ closer than ever’. He did emphasize that ‘there is no deal until we agree on everything’.

Insiders have already indicated that a deal now really seems to be within reach. The coming days are expected to be crucial. French Foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Wednesday in Parliament that the Iranians must make a decision. ,, Or they cause a serious crisis in the coming days, or they accept the agreement in which the interests of all parties are secured.”
