US and Japan conducts joint naval exercise

The US and Japanese air forces conducted a joint exercise over the Sea of Japan on Thursday, the Japanese Ministry of Defense reports. The exercise followed after North Korea launched a ballistic missile towards this sea earlier in the day.

Japanese authorities called on residents of the northern island of Hokkaido to stay indoors, as they thought the missile might land there offshore. That warning was later rescinded. The missile eventually landed off the coast of North Korea and not in Japanese territory, the Japanese Coast Guard said.

Pyongyang has held more than fifteen missile tests since February, including with intercontinental missiles. Representatives of Japan, the United States and South Korea have spoken to each other about the new launch and condemned the new trial. They say North Korea is constantly threatening regional peace with “an unprecedented level of provocations and threatening words,” Seoul said.
